History

Following the I. International Mediterranean and Middle East Orthopedics and Traumatology Congress held in Ankara in 1970, the decision was taken for establishing an association named “Orthopedics and Traumatology Association” with the objective of coordinating the studies of the associations related to Orthopedics and Traumatology located in three major cities in Turkey and giving a service to all our colleagues throughout the country. Thus stating its activities, the board of founders completed the foundation of our Association in the same year.

After the official foundation of the Association a temporary board of administrators was elected and started to function. The temporary board of administrators of our Association was comprised of the following members: Chairman – Prof. Dr. Rýdvan Ege, Vice Chairmen – Prof. Dr. Merih Eroðlu, Asst. Prof. Kut Sarpyener, General Secretary – Prof. Dr. Þükrü Bayýndýr and Accountant Member – Surg. Dr. Ali Akçiçek.

After the I. National Orthopedics and Traumatology Congress held in Eðirdir in 1966, the new Board of Administrators organized the first congress in Istanbul Hilton in May 1971.

Following this congress, our national congresses held biannually are as follows: 1973 Izmir, 1975 Ankara, 1977 Istanbul, 1979 Izmir-Çeþme, 1981 Adana, 1983 Bursa-Uludað, 1985 Alanya, 1987 Mersin, 1989 Ankara, 1991 Kuþadasý, 1993 Nevþehir, 1995 Izmir, 1997 Istanbul, 1999 Antalya, 2001 Antalya-Belek, 2003 Istanbul.

The 19 th National Congress will be held in Antalya Belek, this year. Apart from the national congresses, our association pioneered in organizing regional meetings countrywide. Moreover, we have realized several international congresses in our country.

The founder chairman of our association Prof. Dr Rýdvan Ege has acted as the Chairman of TSOT from 1970 until 2000. During this period great steps were taken towards institutionalization of our Association. Rapid improvements achieved in our branch urged us to reorganize our structure and form some sub-groups. As a result, branch associations like Arthroplasty, Trauma, Pediatric Orthopedics, were founded. In addition, branch associations of TSOT were founded in Bursa, Samsun, Adana and Kayseri. These associations are working under the supervision of TSOT.

One of the objectives of our Association is to provide new opportunities to our young colleagues regarding their education. Thus, we are organizing two courses biannually, namely Basic Sciences and Research Course Summer / Winter School. Furthermore, organizing Basic and Advanced Courses regarding their subject areas, our sub-branch division associations are contributing to the education process of our young colleagues.

In the year 2001, a new institution named Turkish Board of Ortopedics and Traumatology (TBOT) was established by our Association. Further details regarding TBOT are presented on the relevant page.

In 2000, after his resignation from his office, the founder chairman of our association Prof. Dr. Rýdvan Ege was selected as the Honorary Chairman. The Board of Administrators of our association was led by Prof. Dr. Mümtaz Alparslan, (2000-2002) and by Prof. Dr. Remzi Tözün (2002-2004). Since June 2004, Our Board of Administrators is serving our colleagues under the chairmanship of Prof. Dr. Ertan Mergen.
