The institute has a strong emphasis in the design, development and testing of orthopedic implants, surgical instruments, and related hardware and software systems. The ORI also engages in educational and publishing activities for the dissemination of medical information to the public and of technology to the medical community. The Institute's staff and affiliates include physicians, engineers, materials scientists, technicians, resident surgeons, graduate students and consulting faculty members from several universities who collaborate in a stimulating interdisciplinary environment.

What is the Orthopaedic Research Institute?

  • The Orthopaedic Research Institute is an organization dedicated to the development of new technologies to improve human functioning and reduce injury.

  • Established in 1987, the Orthopaedic Research Institute has achieved international recognition for its contributions to science through publications, presentations, and medical education.

  • The Orthopaedic Research Institute has made major contributions to improved human functioning through the invention, testing, and commercialization of medical devices with proven clinical outcomes.

Development
Application of engineering methods, techniques, and procedures to the solution of problems in clinical orthopaedics; resulting in new devices, systems, materials, and procedures.  Further, the application of biocompatibility testing using cutting edge in vitro and in vivo model systems to enhance safety assessments

Research
Applied research in the laboratory and in clinical settings to enhance the understanding of orthopaedic-musculoskeletal diseases, their prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.  Also, pre-clinical evaluation of pharmaceutical drgus and biological response modifiers for the treatment of arthritis and bone disease

Education
Support and training for orthopaedic surgeons, residents, nurses, as well as formal lectures at community organizations and universities to educate the public and professionals in orthopaedics and related musculoskeletal issues

The Orthopaedic Research Institute has extensive facilities for the testing and evaluation of materials, devices, instruments and components.  Evaluations are conducted as “bench top” (mechanical) tests and performance evaluation including tests in simulated biological and atmospheric environments and human cadaver testing.  Consumer/user acceptance and focus group evaluations can also be conducted.  In addition, these testing modalities are backed up with state of the art computational engineering design and analysis capabilities.  Our interdisciplinary setting has proven to be a stimulating and productive venue for solving problems related to health, recreational and consumer products and devices.

Products that have been evaluated in our laboratories are eligible for the Orthopaedic Research Institute Seal of Approval.  This Seal serves as a hallmark of excellence and is awarded only to products that have been subjected to critical testing and have been found to meet established standards for effectiveness, functionality and longevity.  In addition the performance claims of the producer have been scrutinized and have been shown to be accurate and valid.  In short, customers who purchase and use products with this Seal of Approval are assured that the product meets the legal and ethical requirements for functionality in performance and truth and accuracy in advertising. Test results are available to consumers as on-line reports.

Our engineers, technical specialists and orthopaedic surgeons are ready to assist you in solving problems with R & D, performance evaluation, customer acceptance and market penetration.
