The North Carolina Orthopaedic Association NCOA is a statewide membership organization dedicated to serving the profession, representing patients’ interests and advancing musculoskeletal health. Through advocacy, education and public relations, the NCOA is committed to representing the best interests of orthopaedic surgeons and their patients.

The mission of the NC Orthopaedic Association is to advance the science and practice of orthopaedic surgery through education and advocacy on behalf of patients and practitioners, with emphasis on overall quality orthopaedic health care for the state of North Carolina.

History of the North Carolina Orthopaedic Association

In October of 1944 a small group of orthopaedic surgeons, meeting in Winston-Salem with officials of the State Board of Health, decided to form a state orthopaedic association. Dr. Robert A. Moore was elected president. At a subsequent meeting in Raleigh in 1945 the name North Carolina Orthopaedic Association was adopted. There were fifteen charter members. The first annual meeting was held in May of 1946 in Southern Pines with eleven members in attendance. Scientific topics included: wrist tuberculosis; hip arthrodesis; well-leg traction for hip fractures; and a report of “a German medullary peg” for femur fractures. The business meeting dealt with: fee schedules for veterans; crippled children’s and vocational rehabilitation clinics; and treatment of victims of the recent severe polio epidemic. Over the subsequent years the NCOA has grown to over 400 members. NCOA annual meetings now draw over 100 orthopaedic surgeons and scientific sessions now include topics unheard of in 1946 such as: arthroscopic shoulder repair; computer assisted navigation for total knee arthroplasty; and hip arthroscopy. NCOA business meetings now focused on issues such as: Certificates of Need for office operating rooms; legislation concerning relationships between physical therapists and orthopaedic surgeons; and the Workers Compensation fee schedule. The Mission of the North Carolina Orthopaedic Association (NCOA) is to serve North Carolina orthopaedists by providing them with educational products and programs, offering them opportunities to network with each other, representing their interests among state policy-makers, and enhancing their relations with the North Carolina public through patient education and interaction with the media on musculoskeletal health issues.
