About Us

The New Jersey Orthopaedic Society is one of the oldest and largest state orthopaedic societies in the United States.

We are dedicated to providing the highest quality of musculoskeletal care for our patients.

We have nearly 500 members representing urban, suburban, military and academic practice settings. More than 12 of our members are leaders and committee members in our national organization, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Our two primary goals are education and advocacy. Each fall we sponsor a two day CME course for
both residents and practicing orthopaedic surgeons. Residents from all four New Jersey training programs
present research and complicated cases in a grand rounds format. Leading speakers from all around the
country join us for an informative update on orthopaedic techniques and procedures. In the past seven years six former presidents of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons have been featured speakers.

This year our fall program will be chaired by Dr. David Bullek and will take place on Friday October 24 and Saturday October 25 at the Hyatt Regency New Brunswick.

Dr. Wayne Colizza is in charge of our spring program and each year we sponsor a six day CME spring trip to locations such as Nevis, the Bahamas, and Grand Cayman.

Twice a year we have On The Road dinners in different locations throughout the state. These feature an
educational program with a guest speaker followed by an update on political and regulatory issues facing orthopaedic surgeons in New Jersey.

New this year is our Physician Leadership Development Program to identify and train physicians for future
leadership roles in state and national medical organizations. This multi-day program will provide training in
speaking to the media, meeting with legislators, dealing with government agencies and understanding how
to pursue political objectives. The program has been sponsored in part by a donation from Stuart A. Hirsch, MD, past president, New Jersey Orthopaedic Society and recipient of the William Tipton Leadership Award from AAOS.

Many political issues confront New Jersey orthopaedic surgeons in 2008. The Department of Banking and Insurance has moved to limit the PIP schedule for care following automobile accidents. A recent ruling by
a trial court judge in Bergen County threatens to limit physician participation in outpatient surgical centers. Excessive premiums for malpractice insurance continue to plague physicians in all specialties.

NJOS/OSNJ is leading the fight to maintain the high standard of orthopaedic practice that we and our patients all enjoy. Together with the Alliance for Quality Care we are pushing forward on all of these issues.

In the near future we hope to upgrade our web site to provide a physician directory as well as patient education information.

If you are an orthopaedic surgeon we urge you to get active and becoming involved.

If you are a patient or visitor we invite your comments and suggestions. You can reach us at 609-392-6154 or email membership@njos-osnj.org.
