The Society for Sports Medicine was founded on May 8, 1965 and consists solely of doctors. Anno 2008 the association counts 500 members, of whom 126 are io sports medicine or sports medicine. Furthermore, the members general medical, social, medical and / or medical specialists with a high affinity or expertise in the field of sports medicine. The VSG is accessible to doctors who have completed Basic Sports Medicine and registered Belgian sports doctors. To date, a sports medicine specialist social medicine. Objective
The objective of the VSG is as follows in the bylaws:
"The association aims to develop the sport medicine in the broadest sense, promoting and monitoring the quality in the practice of sports medicine and promote the interests of its members."

Notes to the goals
Goal 1
Strengthening / promoting development of box / domain knowledge Sports Medicine
To achieve this goal, the VSG is engaged in the promotion of scientific research in the field of sports medicine, the regular inventories of scientific research in the field of sports medicine, preparing the development and cohesion of possible sports medical professorships and the development of a Knowledge Center where the various modes of knowledge are included (education, information and guideline development).
Goal 2
Guarantors and improve sports medicine act in the professional field
The quality of the sports medicine act is determined by skills, developing and implementing guidelines, science information (publications) and policy development. The VSG is hereby directed at various target groups, namely sports doctors, general practitioners, medical specialists, youth doctors, company doctors. Through the magazine and Sports Medicine publishes the VSG relevant scientific developments and evidence-base sport medical treatment strategies.
Goal 3
Defend the professional interests of sport doctors
Central to such strengthening of the legal status of the Sports Medicine (in the sphere of employment). To that end, the VSG itself among other things, with the development of sports medicine Diagnosis BehandelCombinaties (DBC) and advocacy of sports doctors who are working in similar settings (hospital or in league).
Goal 4
Sports Medicine and sport doctors position in health care and profile in society
