Greeting of the Korean Orthopedic Association KOA
Dear Advisory Committee member's, honored guests of the Korea Orthopaedic Association who have attended the 50th Anniversary Congress of the Korean Orthopaedic Association, and senior and fellow members, it is an honor that I can take office as the 48th president of the Korea Orthopaedic Association and also feel a lot of responsibility for this position.
When our Association was initially established in 1956, there were only five members; now it has grown to a much greater Association, having about 5,200 members and leading 17 related associations. Also, many domestic scholarly events and various large/small international events have been attracted and successfully held every year.
In carrying out the presidential position for the following year, I would like to check the businesses of our association while basing on the accomplishments that have been made by previous presidents and would like to try my best to further develop our association and to protect our rights. The things that I am interested in or would like to try hard during my term of office will be;
First, I would like to concentrate more on international businesses by further extending our business scope. The meaning of "Beyond the 50 Years" that is the slogan of this the 50th Anniversary Congress of the Korean Orthopaedic Association is that it is the time to grow further into the world since our business base has grown up greatly for the past half century. Every year, papers of many members have been published on the registered paper collection of SCI. Also, many papers have been highly admired as to present papers and make speeches on international scholarly events, enhancing national prestige as well as that of our association. Especially in the May of last year on the 79th Annual Congress of the Japanese Orthopaedic Association, the Korea Orthopaedic Association was officially invited and about 100 members attended meetings and presented about 90 papers. Considering these, we could see our area extended beyond the national boundary.
Second, we would try every effort so that the "Journal of Musculoskeletal Surgery"an English edition founded to address various relevant issues can grow as an internationally recognized journal. In order to accomplish this goal, related staffs (such as the chief editor and relevant editors) along with the paper contributors who express great love to our journal will closely cooperate with each other while holding self-sacrificing mind and passion for the effective operation of journal. If this can happen systematically, our goal may be realized in the near future.
Third, I would like to establish "Board of Planning" newly so that it can analyze various domestic and international problems that our Association and members are currently facing with and can establish a long-term plan in resolving them. Recently in our medical field, various new associations have been established and advertising various new orthopedic therapies. For past several years, the Korea Orthopaedic Association has issued certificates of completing the training in connection to the medical therapies not in the curriculum and training courses for the training and study program of practicing doctors. Of these, some are approved by the Korean Medical Association and part of them grant the qualifications for registering to Health Insurance Review Agency. At this point in time, we feel that it is the time to broaden our scientific field by removing gaps between education and reality in order to reflect reasonable things to our study and training courses while studying and reviewing the orthopaedic parts of oriental medicine and various alternative medicines beyond the traditional orthopaedics of western medicine.
Fourth, we will try every effort to protect the rights of practicing Orthopaedic surgeon that take up the majority of our members and to participate directly and broadly in the activities of our Association.
Fifth, we will try to give more members the opportunity of participating practically in various Association activities by studying and arbitrating effectiveness of society organization study committee and various committees. We would like to express our appreciations to ex-President, Myung Chul Yoo, ex-Chairman, Sang Cheol Seong, and ex-Tressurer&Secretary, Myung Chul Lee for their accomplishments, who have faithfully executed their duties for the past one year and have successfully carried out the 50th anniversary. Together with Chairman, Hui Wan Park and Treasurer&Secretary Jung Hyuk Choi and staffs in each board who have excellent personality and capability, I promise to do my best for the development of our Association for the following one year.
We will always open our ears widely to take the tips and advices of advisory members and others. Thank you.
President Yung Khee Chung
