History
The enthusiasm and camaraderie built up among the attendees of the first workshop in Rochester were enormous.
Through a consensus of opinions, the participants decided to gather every other year.
The first and second meetings were defined as Workshops, but after the Gainesville meeting, the Symposium format was adopted and the organization agreed to rotate the biannual events among the American continent, Europe, and Asia (including the Pan-Pacific regions).
Different countries in each region competed to host the meeting.
At the most magnificent site of St. Marlo, off the French coast of Normandy, the International Society of Limb Salvage (ISOLS) was born in 1989.
Through out these years, our Symposia organizers have received numerous compliments as well as criticisms from those within and outside of the group, and we have stuck together, taking these critiques positively as a means to improve the quality of our meetings. Even after the horrifying "9-11" tragedy, many of our members showed up at the 2001 Symposium to make sure that our UK colleagues, under the leadership of Simon Carter, were fully supported and encouraged.
It is amazing that our future meetings have already been scheduled up to 2007.
We have heard that our colleagues from China are planning an all-out effort to win the 2011 hosting rights. "Viva ISOLS!"
