ICRS is a forum for international collaboration in cartilaginous tissue research by bringing together basic scientists and clinical researchers engaged or interested in the field of cartilage biology and cartilaginous tissue engineering.
The link between laboratory work and the daily treatments of patients in a clinical setting is very important.
Subsequently ICRS has as the ultimate goal the stimulation of education and research within the field of cartilage repair through regular meetings, skills courses, publications and other forms of communication.
The International Cartilage Repair Society (ICRS) was founded in 1997 in Switzerland following the 2 International Fribourg Symposium on Cartilage Repair and initiated by the organisers of this first meeting.
Prior to the meeting, the members of the faculty were asked for their opinion regarding our idea and whether they thought there was a place for the creation of a cartilage repair society and the echo was overwhelmingly positive.
The meeting proved indeed to become a unique venue and was successful because we were able to gather on one hand contributions of basic scientists and a research oriented group and on the other clinicians and orthopaedic surgeons focused on one pertinent question. This made up for a truly international symposium with some 330 participants and faculty members from 28 countries.
10 years after, ICRS has now 950 members from 57 Countries and around 1000 participants from 60 Countries who attend the ICRS World Congress, which is hold every 18 months.

- To promote the exchange of ideas and information to further define the role, direction and goals of Cartilage Repair as a subspecialty of Orthopaedics.
- To create a permanent source of funds in order to sponsor education, basic science, clinical research and technical assessments of developments in Cartilage Repair.
Objectives
- meet regularly to encourage communication of issues vital to Cartilage Repair;
- support education and research for the benefit of the discipline;
- to promote excellence in cartilage research
- to foster integration of basic and clinical science
- to facilitate the translation of that science to healthcare and clinical practice
- to coordinate forums for the exchange of ideas concerning the direction and role of Cartilage Repair
- to set standards of practice in Cartilage Repair for Orthopaedic Surgery Procedures and its Rehabilitation.
Long-term Objectives
- the promotion of Cartilage Repair to young doctors, investigators and researchers;
- the establishment of improved training programmes; travelling fellowships;
- the encouragement of appropriate recognition for Cartilage Repair from the industry;
Activities
