The „Society for Orthopaedic Traumatologic Sports Medicine&ldquo GOTS; (Gesellschaft für Orthopädisch-Traumatologische Sportmedizin, GOTS) is the world’s second largest coalition of specialists in sport orthopaedics. The GOTS is the number one in the treatment of sports injuries and guarantees reliability, competence, experience and outstanding quality of care for sports injured patients. The GOTS provides highest standards in consultancy.
More than 600 of the leading physicians in sport orthopaedic surgery of the German speaking countries are united in the GOTS. Beyond ensuring competent medical care for patients with sport injuries the GOTS set the standards for treatment of sport orthopaedic injuries and consequences of physical strain. The annual meeting of the GOTS is the event for exchange of ideas and knowledge.
Training and education of young doctors in orthopaedic sports medicine is an essential focus of the work of the GOTS. To achieve these goals the GOTS offers a comprehensive education and training programme in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and a fellowship programme in Europe and Asia. Beyond that the GOTS publishes the journal „Sportorthopädie – Sporttraumatologie“ and the „GOTS-Manual der Sporttraumatologie“.
The membership of physicians of sport associations and of national Olympic teams connects the GOTS closely with competitive medicine. They mediate their experience and knowledge on their annual intensive educational course for competition medicine.
With this website we want to express the tasks and the aims of the GOTS.The GOTS will draw up treatment recommendations and intensify the public work to strengthen the leading position in sports orthopaedics. You are heartily welcome to actively participate in this process.
Best regards

History
The GOTS was founded in 1986 by orthopaedic surgeons from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Due to the rapidly growing number of members, the GOTS is now the largest and most important association of sport orthopaedic surgeons behind the „American Orthopaedic Society for Sports medicine“ (AOSSM).
The GOTS views sports medicine as a holistic, dialog oriented medicine and tries to unite common interests of the different specialities orthopaedic surgery, trauma surgery, biomechanics, physiotherapy, physical therapy and sports sciences.
The selfimage of the GOTS and the activities are characterised by the strong links between research and sport medical praxis, interdisciplinary events and cooperations with international institutes and the integration of industry. The GOTS maintained an intensive dialog with the public, athletes, trainers and sports associations
The reintroduction of the Olympic games in 1896 promoted the interdisciplinary research of sportinduced strain. Germany became in the following years the mother country of sports medicine. The sport medical development was decisively influenced by the international hygiene exhibition in Dresden 1911.
The success of this exhibition led to the organisation of the first congress for physical exercise. During this congress the „German Reich committee for the scientific research of Sports and Exercises“ was founded, which was renamed in 1924 to „German federation of physicians for the promotion of exercise“. This was the beginning of organised sports medicine.
In 1933 the "German federation of Physicians for the Promotion of Exercises " was renamed again, now into the "German Association of Sports Physicians”. This association was disbanded during the second world war and in 1950 reestablished. Since 1951 the revised guidelines from 1925 for the title sport physician have been valid. In 1970 The „German Society of Sports Physicians“ decided on modified guidelines for obtaining the additional title sports medicine in the assembly of the delegates.
The first sport medical outpatient department was set up in the soviet occupied zone in 1947. With the foundation of the „German University of Body Culture” in 1950 in Leipzig was the first department established for sports medicine. The high value of sports medicine in the GDR was indicated by the introduction of the specialist for sports medicine. The „Society for Sports Medicine of the GDR“ joined the German Association of Sports Physicians“, which was renamed 1998 into „German Society for Sports Medicine and Prevention“.
The inadequate consideration of sports orthopaedic surgeons and the sports orthopaedic matters within both, the German Association of Sports Physicians and the orthopaedic professional associations, led to the foundation of the „Society for Orthopaedic Traumatologic Sports Medicine“ (Gesellschaft für Orthopädisch-Traumatologische Sportmedizin, GOTS), which since then has represented the relevant interests of the sports orthopaedics.
Until today only one chair for orthopaedic surgery and sports orthopaedics exists in Germany at the Technical University of Munich.
