Dear colleagues and friends

Infection of bones and joints is the most feared complication in orthopaedic surgery. Internal fixation of fractures and osteotomies as well as alloplastic replacement of joints and
other parts of the musculoskeletal system inevitably are encumbered with a specific infection rate. The absolute number of patients with infections continuously increases
as the number of performed surgery grows.

This means often year –long suffering for the patients, increasing expenses burdening the health care systems and exhaustive efforts of the treating teams. A multidisciplinary approach in research and innovative development aiming at better understanding of the disease and consequently improved diagnosis and management of infections shall be at our patients benefit and the health care systems´ relief.

The European Bone and Joint Infection Society EBJIS is the largest society in the field of orthopaedic infections and the Annual Congress is its most respected scientific event. EBJIS intends to encourage collaboration among Orthopaedic Surgeons, Microbiologists, Infectious Disease specialists, Molecular Biologists, Material Science Specialists and others working within the field of Musculoskeletal Infections.

In 2009 experts from all European countries and beyond will share their knowledge and experience in Vienna, presenting the best of their achievements. During our conference we want to highlight several exciting topics: Osseous defects need to be addressed after every surgical intervention - indication based choice of methods is still under debate. There are open questions concerning internal stabilization of discontinuities, not only regarding the design of the used devices but also timing and concomitant measures. Understanding the mechanisms of biofilm production and its clinical implications probably is the key for progress in septic surgery. The psychological and economical situation of the patients often is not regarded properly during the prolonged periods of treatment. These and other topics hopefully will be elucidated during our meeting

The venue, Palais Niederösterreich, is a 16th century palace of gorgeous architecture right in the very center of the old imperial city. All kinds of sights, shopping areas, museums, parks and entertainment are within walking distance, excursions to the numerous beauty spots of the Vienna Woods offer the opportunity to enjoy and discover a fascinating nucleus of history and beauty.

We are looking forward to welcome you in Vienna
for an exciting meeting among friends.
