The BSS is an affiliated society of the British Orthopaedic Association.

The British Scoliosis Society was established in 1975 to advance the study of, research into and treatment of scoliosis and spinal deformities for the public benefit.
The object of the British Scoliosis Society is to provide an open forum for Scoliosis surgeons, Scientists and Health Care Professionals to engage in debate about scoliosis aetiology, pathogenesis and treatment and the presentation and encouragement of scoliosis research.
The Objects of the society are to provide a forum for the study of the origin, natural history and treatment of spinal deformities. In furtherance of these objects, the society shall
- Attempt to ensure the highest possible standards of management for individuals with spinal deformities
- Promote, finance and organise research and development in the field of spinal deformities
- Educate the community in general, and medical practitioners and associated professionals in the most effective methods of recognition, prevention, treatment and long term management of spinal deformities
- The society may accumulate funds and receive donations to further the above objectives
Members or the BSS are involved in the training of future spine surgeons who are encouraged to join the society
