About US
In 1983 the Argentine Association of Osteology and Mineral Metabolism (AAOMM) was founded. Since its beginning the main goal was to promote the development of both basic and clinical research and the dissemination and deepening of knowledge in the area of bone and mineral metabolism and related diseases.
Through these nearly 25 years of experience different groups of researchers from our country, whose practitioners are members of our society, have participated in the development and progress of this area of knowledge and its dissemination in multiple scientific communications, symposiums and conferences the annual meetings of the AAOMM.
Have been mixed and fundamental advances in many lines of basic research, including advances in the mechanisms of action of vitamin D in intestine and muscle, the inner mechanisms of fluoride, the effect of melatonin, studies on bone implants (metal fillings and bone) in different experimental models, studies histological, histochemical and histomorphometric in bone tissue, the development of experimental model of deficiency / insufficiency of vitamin D in rats with osteopenia to assess the effect of different antiresorptive and anabolic drugs, the study of the effect consumption of unbalanced diets on the skeleton and studies bone biomechanics, and so on.
A clinical level has promoted the development of Osteology, specialty focused on diseases of bone and mineral metabolism, with the merit of accommodating all of its spectrum: not only those known and more frequent diseases such as osteoporosis, the primary hyperparathyroidism or renal osteodystrophy, but promote the deepening and disseminating knowledge of the pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment in less common diseases such as Paget's disease, osteomalacia, fibrous dysplasia, osteogenesis imperfecta, post-transplant bone disease, Gaucher disease. There have also been introduced polymorphism research on vitamin D receptor and estrogen in different pathologies.
Among the advances diagnoses were the founding members of AAOMM who entered the country since the beginning of bone densitometry, accompanying its development in the area of care and in multiple research in humans and in animal models. They are also notable advances in the laboratory especially with measurements of the main regulatory hormones and markers of bone remodeling.
In recent years, have joined other outreach activities such as teaching and clinical athenaeums and talks to the community in different cities throughout the country, courses for technicians densitometry, molecular biology class, the implementation of this website, the magazine Update Osteology and research plans sponsored by the AAOMM as research levels of vitamin D and epidemiology of osteoporosis in different regions of the country.
The members of AAOMM, belong to different professions: doctors, biochemists, dentists, biologists, nutritionists. They develop their work in universities, hospitals and specialized health centers across the country, contributing not only to its research development and deepening of knowledge but to the strengthening of working groups and training of young professionals in the areas named.
