Mission Statement

The mission of the American Association for Hand Surgery shall be to foster and to promote the highest quality of hand care through the development and sponsorship of educational programs related to the hand and the upper extremity, through communications with health care professionals and the public, and through the endowment of research.

Vision for the Future

The American Association for Hand Surgery will continue to evolve into a broadly representative organization of hand surgery and therapy professionals. The Association’s primary responsibility will remain educational, with a primary emphasis on clinical concepts and the technical aspects of hand care. Technologies that are best suited to the educational and informational needs of membership will be embraced and adopted. Fiscal responsibility will remain a highest priority with attention to the development of reserves and endowments with which to compliment association educational and research programming. The Association will resolve to remain a leader in the world-wide community of hand surgery organizations.

Founding

The American Association for Hand Surgery was founded by a group of American and Canadian hand surgeons. The group received their training under Dr. Joseph L. Posch at the Grace Hospital in Detroit and shared a vision of forming an organization that would represent the interest of all surgeons practicing hand surgery.

In 1970, that vision became a reality. The founding purpose of the American Association for Hand Surgery was to provide an educational forum to increase the professional expertise and knowledge of surgeons involved in hand surgery.

Today, the association has grown to over 1100 members and has been expanded to include hand therapist and other health professionals who care for patients with hand and upper extremity problems.

Membership

Today, the Association's membership of over 1100 represents a diverse but cohesive mixture of highly respected professionals who work in all disciplines related to hand surgery. The members include orthopedic surgeons, plastic surgeons, general surgeons, microsurgeons, hand therapists, nurses, and basic scientists from the United States and Canada, as well as many other countries around the world. The diversity of AAHS membership fosters improved communication and sharing of ideas between health care professionals.

The AAHS has high standards of excellence for its membership, and election to membership is based upon training, board certification, scientific and professional accomplishment, and the degree of active interest and experience in the disciplines related to hand surgery.
