Academic Orthopaedic Society Votes to Integrate its Organization into The American Orthopaedic Association
AOS members vote overwhelmingly in support of the merger
ROSEMONT, Ill., January 20, 2003--
The American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) announced today
that members of the Academic Orthopaedic Society (AOS) approved a motion to give the AOS Executive
Committee authority to integrate its operations into the AOA.
Formal dissolution of the AOS will occur at the end of the year, but in the meantime, the AOA and AOS are
working to transition key activities and to develop an effective infrastructure in the AOA that will serve
increased academic needs.
As part of the agreement, the AOA will establish an Academic Issues Committee (AIC). The AIC will
initially be populated by members of the AOS Executive Committee and presidential line.
Dr. James
Hamilton, AOS president-elect, will serve as the inaugural chairman of the AIC. The AIC will be responsible
for driving academic issues within the AOA and the chair of the committee will hold a seat on the AOA
Executive Committee.
This group, in conjunction with the Executive Committee, will implement the
academic agenda for the AOA which has been developed to align with AOS needs. The first AIC meeting
will take place at the AOA’s 116th Annual Meeting in Charleston, SC.
