Leroy C. Abbott Orthopaedic Society AOS

LeRoy Charles Abbott, Orthopaedic Surgery: San Francisco

1890-1965
Professor Emeritus

The loss by death of a colleague in the medical profession is always saddening.
In the case of a distinguished man who had in the course of a long and vigorous career given the benefits of his talents freely and humanely to innumerable patients and students, and who had helped immeasurably to advance the quality of the discipline in which he worked, the loss is irreparable, for it calls attention to the uniqueness of the man and the special value of his contribution to the profession.

All those who had known and worked with Dr. LeRoy C. Abbott felt this sense of irreparable loss when they learned of his death on December 19, 1965, at the age of seventy-five.
He was, first of all, an active man, and his dynamism communicated itself to those with whom he associated.
He was a superbly competent orthopaedic surgeon; he was skilled in the matters of organization and development of clinical and educational units; and he was talented at evaluating the ability and potentiality of others and unobtrusively encouraging them to function at their highest capacities.
Because he knew when to listen as well as when to speak, these abilities served him well in every capacity in which he served: as a medical officer during World War I, as private assistant to Sir Harold Stiles at the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh, as Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Michigan, and, for seven years, in twin capacities as Chief
